NEW MUSIC FROM KOBIE DEE ‘SAME OLD SH!T’

Kobie Dee is back with the hard-hitting new single “Same Old Sh!t”.

True to form, Kobie elevates his latest track with the unflinching vision, effortless flow and signature narrative style we’ve come to expect from this exciting young artist.

Originally written over another beat, “Same Old Sh!t” is now backed by a hefty beat from Canberra production duo The Husssh, who have also written tracks for Aussie Hip Hop heavyweights B Wise and Turquoise Prince.

The autobiographical track details Kobie’s own struggles with addiction and mental health challenges as well as broader issues commonly experienced by his community.

Kobie says of the track: “At the time I wrote this track I was dealing with a lot of things, from addiction to my mental health. The only way I knew how to express what I was going through was through my music. Today, I’m able to look back and see the growth from then until now. So much has changed, from becoming a father to getting myself sober and working on my mental health.”

‘Same Old Sh!t” is the latest single in a growing catalogue of powerful tracks that have garnered over 7 million streams to date and firmly cemented Kobie as one of the most important voices in the Australian Hip Hop scene.

The video was shot around Kobie’s local area of Matraville by Maxed Out Films.

ALICE SKYE BACK WITH NEW SINGLE ‘GRAND IDEAS’

Naarm-based Wergaia / Wemba Wemba woman, Alice Skye, today unveils her first single for 2020, “Grand Ideas”, out via Bad Apples Music. Produced by Jen Cloher, the release arrives with artwork by Prime Minister of the National Indigenous Youth Parliament, Aretha Brown, and will be launched live on Saturday, June 6 as part of online music event Delivered Live, hosted by Henry Wagons and Myf Warhurst.

“Grand Ideas” finds a backbone firm in the indie rock realm, with layers of warm rhythms, smiling keys and big drum beats crafting a body-moving soundscape for Alice’s introspective lyricism. Bursting from within as she confronts the burdening helplessness that emanates from the mind’s messes, Alice’s silky vocals project a boldness in dreaming of the great escape from oneself and the “grand ideas” we build to break from the thoughts within.

The single follows last year’s evocative track “I Feel Better But I Don’t Feel Good”, praised for further shedding light on Alice’s ability to capture everyday, tumultuous internal battles through raw musicality and awe-inspiring transparency. Since the release of 2015’s debut single “You Are the Mountains” and subsequently becoming a finalist in the triple j Unearthed NIMA competition, Alice Skye has assumed form as one of Australia’s brightest voices and most honest lyricists. In 2018, Alice was awarded the inaugural First Peoples Emerging Artist Award before releasing her debut album Friends With Feelings, catching the immediate attention of Double J, garnering the titles of FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week and triple j Unearthed’s Feature Artist, reaching #10 in the iTunes charts, and has since accumulated one million Spotify streams. In 2019, Alice returned to appear on ABC’s Deadly Hearts compilation album with single “Speak Your Language”, before taking home the Emerging Artist Award at the 2019 Australian Women in Music Awards. On stage, she has supported the likes of Paul Kelly, Benny Walker, Archie Roach, Colin Hay, Thelma Plum, Stella Donnelly and more as well as toured her debut album with childhood friends and close bandmates, Sam and Kane King. In the past 12 months Alice has performed at Lost Lands Festival, the Sounds Australia stage at the Folk Alliance International Conference in New Orleans, and supported Paul Kelly for Twilight at Taronga. Most recently, following the effects of COVID-19, Alice’s SXSW campaign and upcoming August tour to Canada have been hindered. Performances have meanwhile instead been showcased across Instagram Live festival Isol-Aid, and Ticketmaster’s Facebook Live Together Fest.

“Grand Ideas” marks Alice Skye’s second single with prolific Indigenous label Bad Apples Music since signing early last year. Founded by Briggs, the label aims to use music as a platform for social change and fostering the talent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

BRIGGS RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘EXTRA EXTRA’

Briggs has shared his latest taste of new music, sharing “Extra Extra” as the first single from his upcoming EP.

“‘Extra, Extra’ is how I live. No days off,” Briggs says of the track. “Everything I do is Extra – you can check my resume for that. A lot of people know me for a lot of different things – but this is back to the fundamentals of who I am as Briggs.”

KOBIE DEE RELEASES HIS NEW SINGLE “STILL STANDING” FEATURING LIYAH KNIGHT

Gamilaroi artist Kobie Dee shares his latest single “Still Standing” ft Liyah Knight. The highly anticipated track comes on the heels of his viral single “Jody”, which has accumulated over 2 million streams to date.

The 22-year-old MC has captured audiences across Australia with his effortless flows, precise delivery, and an uncanny knack for storytelling that connects deeply with his listeners. In his short time on the scene, Kobie has quickly become one of the most important voices in Australian hip hop.

Kobie Dee’s latest offering is a heartfelt and profoundly moving track about the hard-hitting topics of the Stolen Generation, January 26th, and challenges experienced by Aboriginal people. Kobie says of his latest track:

“The first verse I actually wrote in 2016 after invasion day, and the second I finished at the beginning of this year. The song is about the Stolen Generation and some of the issues that we face as Aboriginal people. My great grandfather was taken from his parents in Wreck Bay. I personally couldn’t imagine how much that would have hurt to be taken from your parents and away from your culture. It is something that makes me sad when I look at my daughter because I couldn’t live if I had her taken from me.”

The song was produced by Ascent Beats and features the rising singer/songwriter Liyah Knight, whose tender vocals play the perfect counterpart to the rawness of Kobie’s lyrics.

Australia’s Bmike Independently Releases “No Fakes” Featuring Dax

Hip-hop’s definitely reach around the world and back in the last four decades, birthing variations bound by culture. For South African-born, Australian-raised artist Bmike, studying the greats of the 90s and early 00s gave him the blueprint and the hustle to build a loyal fanbase.

After 13 million views on YouTube for his latest single “Anxiety,” Bmike has found himself thriving in a fanbase without the press and returning with his latest single, “No Fakes,” alongside Dax.

Born and raised in South Africa, reared by Australia and flexing his skills to American audiences. Bmike is displaying what has taken him across the world several times and partnered him with all audiences. His work has displayed storytelling, an understanding of culture, and being able to tap into the world while representing Black Heart Gang. Black Heart Gang is a theme that his music fits into while doubling as a platform for other artists.

Mike grew up in South Africa and studied The Source, using it as a blueprint for his own releases. His latest is “No Fakes,” detailing that he can do it on his own, without a machine and being the point guard of his own situation. The release partners him with Dax, providing a cinematic experience you can experience from a Netflix production.

Digable Planets Set For Debut Australian Tour

Legendary Hip-Hop trio Digable Planets make their way down to Australia and New Zealand for the very time next month for a string of highly anticipated shows.

Consisting of Butter Fly, Ladybug Mecca, and Doodlebug, Digable Planets are of course most notable for the two classic albums they released in the 90s – the successful crossover debut Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) in early 1993 on Pendulum/Elektra Records and Blowout Comb in late 1994. Their heavily jazz inspired debut album was initially self-produced in-house by Butter Fly clocking in just shy of an hour. It featured no guest appearances and their debut single “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” released in late 1992 would go on to win a Grammy Award in 1994 for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Both the album and lead single charted well internationally, and both went Gold in America. The group went on a hiatus the year after, with all going on to work on various projects individually.

Digable Planets followed up their successful debut with the critically acclaimed yet ultimately not as commercially successful “Blowout Comb”. The release featured notable appearances from the late Guru of Gang Starr, Jeru The Damaja and DJ Jazzy Joyce amongst significant original music credits. While the album both the singles from the album “9th Wonder (Blackitolism)” and “Dial 7 (Axioms of Creamy Spies)” failed to attract widespread mainstream success at the time, the release has go on to be a widely considered classic and seminal mid-90s album which captured a certain vibe of Brooklyn at the time.

The group reformed in 2005 and released the compilation album Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles, a remastered best-of album largely with the notable addition of two new tracks and remixes. Creative differences led to a break in late 2012 for the group, before again reforming in 2015 and embarking on a series of tours and releasing a live album in 2017. Now 25 years since the release of Blowout Comb, Australian and New Zealand fans have the opportunity to witness the Digable Planets experience live and direct with a full band as they take in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland just before Christmas.

Dead Prez Set For Australia to Celebrate ‘Let’s Get Free’ 20-Year Anniversary

Let’s Get Free is the now-classic debut studio album by NYC hip-hop duo, dead prez consisting of stic.man and M-1 that was released on Loud Records on March 14, 2000, after an extended rollout. Critically and commercially acclaimed upon its release, Let’s Get Free was widely called a return to politically conscious rap not seen on the level since Public Enemy’s string of classic albums in the late 80s and early 90s. The album featured not only substantial self-production but also significant production credits to Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian, Hedrush and a young pre-Roc-A-Fella Records Kanye West amongst a string of memorable socially conscious political vocal samples from the likes of Chairman Omali Yeshitela, Huey P. Newton amongst others.

Navigating the theoretical space commonly referenced as somewhere between N.W.A. and P.E., dead prez’s breakthrough song was their second single “Hip Hop” off this debut album released a year earlier in March 1999. Their mixture of conscious lyrics with an infectious hook resulted in a bonafide hip-hop classic that helped this single crack the Top 50 and the album peaking at Number 23. Mixing militant pan-African Nationalism, commentary on music’s over-commercialization with socialist narratives offered through a technically very well-delivered manner proved to be a recipe that people worldwide could appreciate. Their passion and knowledge of social issues mixed in a sonically pleasing manner is no mean feat to do and has led them to have such a lasting legacy today.

Being toured down under by Australia’s all-time pre-eminent hip hop promoter in Slingshot Touring & Events in conjunction with Century Entertainment, Australian fans can expect legendary dead prez shows live and direct to celebrate 20 years since the release of their iconic debut album. Announced all ready to play the Metro Theatre in Sydney venue with local talents Lil Spacely and Genesis Owusu, dead prez continues to build their legacy internationally to a diverse and generational fanbase. They continue to show and prove why it’s bigger than hip-hop.

NOOKY DROPS DEBUT EP ‘JUNCTION COURT’

“The white cockatoo, Nyalwal flew through the fire and was badly hurt, injured & burned… but he made it out the other side. As he was flying over the river he noticed his reflection and was horrified at what he saw, but when he returned to his community, the people celebrated him. He went through the fire and experienced all that pain but he came out wiser, stronger, bigger, faster and matured. He was badly scarred, but he was a better version of himself. Junction Court is based on this story; it’s me going through the fire. It starts and ends with the same track, because I haven’t made it out yet. I’m still dealing with things.”

Today, Yuin MC and esteemed Australian rapper Nooky shares his debut EP Junction Court, out on October 11 via Bad Apples Music. The 7-track journey stems from moments of heartache and loss to the personal trials and tribulations that have followed, delivered through the lens of his political eye, complex wordplay and rich Indigenous pride.

Paying tribute to his hometown stomping ground by name, Junction Court brings to light the frustration and helplessness faced at a time of grievous loss, meanwhile drawing attention to the everyday battles experienced by fellow First Nations People. Nooky claws for survival amid all-consuming struggles from past and present, grappling with ongoing social, political and personal turmoil to deliver a snapshot of life in its rawest form through his most refined sound and honest rhymes yet. Balancing between heated energy and softer moments, the series of tracks leave no stone unturned as he delves into his own introspection while facing paradoxes between feeling incomplete and belonging to a broader community binded in heritage.

The black cockatoo creation story (mentioned above) lends lessons in hardship, lasting wounds and resilience and seep into the foundation of opening track “Nowa Nowa pt.1 Selway”. A poignant eulogy, Nooky confides in a lost mentor and loved one, with stings laid bare as his voice breaks beneath weights of hurt, while the chorus recognises strength in the fire and smoke that transformed the white cockatoo into the majestic blackness.

“Charged Up” pulls Nooky into a new legion of his own, capped with world class production matching the natural vocal ferocity he comes alive in. Fuelled in fury and vice, Nooky bares explosive emotion culminating in a fierce call out to the birthplace that has shaped him. “PS2” pokes fun with cheeky humour upfront, before unleashing a pungent metaphor for life’s games. Returning single “Numb” next steps to the plate, broadening Nooky’s unapologetic attitude while taking another step back from signature fiery lyrics to honest words, dips in trap production and a gripping insight into first-hand facets of addiction. Unpacking moments at the brink of emotion when substances are used for numbing the pains within, Nooky draws attention to the blessings of the medicine that’s turned to.

The hard-hitting beats and layered vocals of “Liberty City” pay respect to the cities he’s called home and the independence they’ve bestowed (while giving a shout out to classic Grand Theft Auto), before “CUZN” channels intricate wordplay with a profound expression, highlighting the trials and tribulations of being a young, misunderstood Indigenous Australian. Calling out issues of youth incarceration and taking swings at injustice while speaking to his own lost cousin, Nooky shines a light on the cultural bonds that stand behind the track’s title term for kinship.

Drawing to a close, “Nowa Nowa pt.2 Lucas” completes the last stanzas of his eloquent poem, signing off a tribute to another lost friend who’s bond ties back to his early days in Nowra. While seeking out the moments one gets lost on a strayed pathway, Nooky rests in his state of no resolution unsure of where to go next, while screeches of birds and haunting sirens chase his words.

Accompanying the release is a powerful extended visual for the EP’s opening and closing tracks “Nowa Nowa pt. 1 Selway” and “Nowa Nowa pt. 2 Lucas”, as well as news of upcoming EP launch shows. Nooky will first hit Melbourne’s Grace Darling on Sunday, October 20 before firing up the walls of Waywards in Sydney on Friday, October 25 and taking to his hometown for a very special performance at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Saturday, November 16.
