Resin Dogs ‘Pack Your Bags’ wins best Hip Hop / Rap song at the QMA’s

Celebrating what was a great return to the music scene for the band in 2018, Resin Dogs picked up the best Hip Hop / Rap song with ‘Pack Your Bags’ at the 7th annual Queensland Music Awards in Brisbane last night.

Awarded the win by the event’s panel of national and international industry judges, the track features long-time collaborator Abstract Rude, who returned to the studio with the band on ‘Pack Your Bags’ for Resin Dogs critically acclaimed 2018 ‘NOTORIOUS D.O.G’ Album.

The band performed the track live at the QMA’s, along with surprise guest Abstract Rude who flew in from LA to join the band on stage for this very special event.

10 years in the making, the 14 track album ‘NOTORIOUS D.O.G’ featured an array of artists from across the globe and locally who were a part of the record, and featured singles ‘Como No’ Feat Essa, ‘Activate The Soul’ Feat Mantra, and ‘So Long’ Feat Kel On Earth.

‘Pack Your Bags’ is the latest single to be lifted from the album and is a song telling tales of touring stories throughout the years with the Dogs. The song will also be the lead track for the album release in Europe where the band have recently signed to Tokyo Dawn Records.

Interview: Mitchos Da Menace Breaks His ‘SILENCE’

aahh: Compared to your previous two releases, how do you see ‘silence’ the album representing your evolution as an artist?
Menace: Brother, I was hoping that the fans could answer that question for me. Since you’re asking me though, you listen to the first album, the second album and then the third one. From that, you can see the evolution. It’s maturity bro. I had to mature with my life experiences and what’s going on at the moment and that is portrayed in my music. I’m the MENACE and you all know it now! MGR.

aahh: On the title track SILENCE you state that “you like silence but can’t stand it” can you elaborate further on the ideas behind this track and the title of the album?
Menace: It’s me saying I like to be alone but it’s going be the death of me… I self destruct in different terms, it means a lot on a personal level. I actually got a beat from Oagz called “Serenade Of Silence”. I made the album from that beat and that idea.

aahh: How do you see independent artists such as yourself shaping the future of hip hop in this country?
Menace: We are the future of Aus Hip-Hop. We have so many talented artists making moves. From Manu Crooks heading to the USA and us collaborating with UK artists. We have helped shape it whether people accept/or like it or not! We carve lanes and inspire people in the local scene!

aahh: There have been numerous positive comments we’ve read about the beat selection on the new LP. What was your process for choosing the beats on the album?
Menace: I’ve been in a dark place over the last year Jim. This includes stuff with my family and myself. I needed to get a lot off my chest. The beats I picked touched me, to be honest. Deep dark and melodic.

aahh: You’ve opened silence with a small intro, can you tell us more about this and how it relates to the wider concepts on the album?
Menace: In simpler terms, it means “We stay silent, if a problem arises, me and my family take care of it, we don’t speak out to others, stay silent” – Mitchos The Menace!

aahh: What’s next for Menace?
Menace: I have a really big year ahead. 2019 will change a lot of lives, I’ll be giving 100% in everything I do! Keep your eyes peeled, you might even catch us overseas! MG201L7 .

The great philosopher Tkay Maidza once famously wrote “last year was weird”. She wasn’t wrong.

Releasing the video for Underwater today is significant for me because, in many ways, it marks the end of the Sunrise Chaser journey. There’s nothing else planned or scheduled. It’s all done, closing out maybe definitely the weirdest period of my life. I’d like to take a moment to write seriously about some serious feelings.

Firstly, a little about the vid: I made this by myself. The story is about looking outside yourself for something that will reignite your happiness, and not necessarily finding it.

Perhaps you have found something that does that for you; I’m not 100% I have yet.

That’s not to say I am always unhappy, because I’m not. Although I doubt myself more than I ever have. I have more down days than I used to. I constantly worry about letting down the people that rely on me. I think that this may be a common thing for musicians from things I’ve read. Maybe for everyone?

It’s shit because it hampers the wins, because I don’t fully allow myself to celebrate, because I know there’s more work to do, and at no point have I exceeded the ridiculously high expectations I have of myself.

It’s shit because I have ended up second guessing myself and softening the things that I artistically took most pride in previously.

This may all sound a bit bleak, because it is quite bleak I guess. But i don’t think I’m the only person who has felt it, and in a certain way I’m glad that I’ve gone through the process so that I don’t have to again.

The lessons I’ve learnt about how I want to create moving forward are invaluable and I think this song and video are a taste of that.

I’ve recalibrated back to wanting to make things that I want to make, rather than a compromise between what I want to make and what I think other people expect me to make. I can’t wait to make new music, and videos, and podcasts, and DJ mixes, and stupid Instagram posts.

There is a level of catharsis that came with making this video. It helped me express how free I feel now.

I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you enjoy what’s to come from me in the years to come (whichever hat I may be wearing.

A final thought on happiness, from one of my best friends:

Everyone is deluded by their own positive thoughts about themselves. That’s the only way to maintain happiness.

I look forward to deluding myself again.

Turquoise Prince Releases Brand New Single ‘Some Nights’

Turquoise Prince is back with a stellar new single titled Some Nights. The upbeat track, which premiered on Triple J’s Home & Hosed program, is the first official offering since the much-celebrated release of Lighter, however in the interim the Canberra-bred MC/rapper (who was recently named as one of YouTube’s Artists To Watch in 2019) has successfully kept his growing legion of fans satisfied; releasing the cheeky banger Eric Banas and the hard-hitting street track Concussed a special collaboration with buzzing rapper ChillinIt.

Some Nights offers something different. The dreamy yet club-ready garage beat provides a canvas for Turquoise to lay himself bare with musings on a lost love. “It’s a song that’s close to my heart, I wrote it when I was in a sad place, everyone’s been there.” Introspective and vulnerable, this is a side of Turquoise that is always there, often hidden behind a tough exterior, but never forgotten.

His music journey started with a diss track about his Year 7 teacher Mrs Gupta, eventually graduating to rap battles against his Canberra classmates. And whether those early battles resulted in praise or punch-ons, Turquoise was addicted to showmanship. Today, Turquoise Prince is an artist that critics still find impossible to categorise, and one who thrives on unpredictability with catchy, colourful results.

His breakout single Like Your Friends is upbeat R&B at its best, while the mesmerising Lighter takes things down to a lounging tempo. Hard-headed bangers alongside underground stars (ChillinIt, Mitchos Da Menace) feature Turquoise rapping with a Tongan warrior mentality, and collaborations with local hip-hop heroes (Horrorshow, Hau) have proven that this young shark can easily swim with the veterans.

Manaz Ill elevates with the release of new single “Level Up”

The Adelaide Hip-Hop mainstay sets the stage for the release of his long-awaited album ‘Braille’ with the Hamley produced lead single “Level Up”.

Featuring an infectious hook over ominous production, the energetic lead single sees Manaz flexing his signature brand of lyricism, openly challenging his contemporaries to step their game up.

“The song is meant to serve as motivation, both to my listeners and myself. It’s the soundtrack for anyone striving to better themselves” says Manaz, real name Rian Kavanagh.

Baker Boy Releases New Single ‘Cool As Hell’

January 25th 2019 turned out to be quite a day for Danzal Baker aka Baker Boy. Since ‘Cloud 9’, the Fresh Prince of Arnhem Land has played over 70 gigs and collected 23 key awards. His feet don’t look like touching the ground anytime soon with the release of his first track for Island Records Australia/ Universal Music titled ‘Cool As Hell’. ‘Cool As Hell’ was written by Baker Boy, along with Hip Hop greats Thundamentals and writer/producer Carl Dimataga; and is a fresh new style. With hooks galore, sprinklings of disco and a dancefloor bass-line, ’Cool As Hell’ proves “fun” is infectious. Working with Thundamentals pushed Baker Boy to build on his arsenal and embrace his singing nature. He rose to the challenge with ‘Cool As Hell’ where we get to witness another side of this brothaboy who has the innate ability to keep the element of fun and positive vibes burning bright.

Baker Boy knew he had to bring his hallmark positivity packed message and Thundamentals imagined a song Baker Boy and his crew dancing to. It didn’t need to be clever, it didn’t need to pull on the heart-strings, it just needed to be fun.

“I just came up with a loose concept of celebrating the way that music makes us all feel good”, says Baker Boy.

“Everyone latched on to the concept from the first few notes of the bassline and the song morphed really quickly and seamlessly from there,” says Carl, “basically we all had fun making this, and I think that’s come through in the finished song.”

They continue to write more songs for a forthcoming album in August.

Kerser Set To Release New Album ‘Lifestyle’ On March 8

Lifestyle, Kerser’s 8th album release in as many years is set for release on March 8^th. The Campbelltown-bred emcee hit the studio and worked alongside acclaimed Sydney producer Open Till L8. The pair put their heads together to craft all of the beats and Kerser describes this process as returning to his roots – the last time he worked in this way was on album number 4, King.

On working alongside Open Till L8 to create the 15 tracks that would become Lifestyle, Kerser enthuses, “We were both in the studio at once and we were vibin’. Straight away we were on the same page.”

Kerser was in search of “a real modern sound” for ‘Lifestyle’ and found exactly what he was looking for in Open Till L8’s beats. “Staying relevant with the times, that’s always been a mission, ’cause this is album 8 in 8 years so I gotta make sure the albums don’t sound too repetitive,” The lead single Da Kers Effect exemplifies this with its minimal intro of distorted vocal phrases making way for thunderous, vibrating bass. “I just wanna hear it through a massive venue system,” Kerser confesses. “Hopefully the whole venue shakes!”

Kerser fans will already have digested Exceptional, an album teaser/promo track from Lifestyle that dropped last month. A haunting, melodic intro is interrupted by a siren before Kerser announces, “I’m about to bring that real shit back/Shit’s turned into a fashion show“.

And of course it wouldn’t be an ABK Records release without a feature from one of Kerser’s label mates: Jay UF trades verses on What Ya Day Brings Part 2, a playful continuation of their previous collab track What Ya Day Brings.

Renewed vigour permeates all the way through album number 8 and Kerser admits, “When my voice came back it really inspired me to get back into the studio – once the tour was finished – and do as much recording as I can.“

At the beginning of 2018, just 2 weeks before he was due to head out on tour off the back of his 7th album, the ARIA-nominated Engraved In The Game, Kerser lost his voice. What was initially believed to be laryngitis was later diagnosed as a paralysed vocal cord. Tour dates were pushed back and Kerser was booked in for surgery. “They weren’t 100% on whether my voice would come back so I was full freakin’, thinkin’ I’d never be able to talk again,” Kerser recalls. “It was like, ‘Give me a broken arm or a broken leg, but don’t take my vocal cord!”

In 2017 the Ghosts In The Room-produced standalone single Total Concentration, featuring Kerser alongside Future and Young Buck – was released on Kerser’s own ABK Records via ADA/Warner Music Australia and it certainly helped place the Sydney emcee on the world stage. A YouTube mixtape that opened with Total Concentration attracted 3 million views and Kerser chuckles, “I think a lot of Americans would’ve been like, ‘Well who’s the Aussie rappin’ on it?‘”
