Talakai flexes on new track ‘Alright’

Renowned for heavy bars, razor flows and pinpoint delivery Talakai and his peers are at the forefront of the Australian Grime scene. After touring late in 2017 Talakai has been on the come up, playing sold out shows around the country and making cheeky appearances on triple j’s Hip Hop show.

Mirrah Infuses Soul With 90’s Influences For New Single, ‘Hold On’

It’s been four years since we last heard from Sydney emcee MIRRAH. From her debut mixtape REFLECT-I-ON and her debut EP, LIFE, she confirmed her status as a force not to reckoned with on the hip-hop scene, and now the Sydney legend is back with another soulful release.

HOLD ON Single Art

Fresh from joining the Elefant Traks crew on RAGE and triple j’s Like A Version, supporting Urthboy, performing with Mojo Juju, and jumping up on stage to perform with both L-FRESH the LION and OKENYO at the Elefant Traks 20th birthday celebrations, Mirrah’s new single ‘Hold On’ proves she really is not only one of the most exciting artists in the scene right now, but also one of the most innovative and versatile voices as well.

With an extensive history in hip-hop both as an artist and dancer, Mirrah has spent the last few years performing and collaborating with L-FRESH the LION, while working on her own music. Focusing on the power and importance of self-love, Mirrah channels her life experience into her storytelling and poetry, while using pop-influenced soul and hip-hop beats which she rides with ease.

‘Hold On’ is all about remembering what is really important: good friends, living in the moment, and of course, love. Inspired by the mad rush of stores during Christmas time and how easily lost people became in their hunt for meaningless gifts, Mirrah reminds us all to never lose sight of those gifts that you can’t buy.

Taken from her forthcoming EP, LOVE, Mirrah channels conscious hip-hop influences like A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Common, Rapsody and even Kendrick Lamar as she lets her message out into the world. Now, as she steps back into the well-deserved spotlight, Mirrah brings her trademark soulful, passionate rhymes coupled with 90’s influenced beats and grooves with her, and with her forthcoming EP release, she aims to provide a bit of comfort and solace in a world that makes that hard to find.

Drapht Introduces ‘Arabella Street’ Part 2

New Single ’24hrs Of Sunlight’ Out Now

Australian hip-hop artist Drapht has a special treat for his fans today. The multi-platinum, ARIA award winning Perth artist has just dropped Part 2 of his sprawling Arabella Street album as well as a brand-new single ’24hrs of Sunlight’ produced with Six Four.

Drapht – 24hrs of Sunlight

Premiered this week on triple j Good Nights, ’24hrs of Sunlight’ is catchy as hell and summer anthem in the making. Drapht explains further…

“The concept for ’24hrs of Sunlight’ has travelled through many different production styles and life forms over the last 7 years. The idea originally came from a David Attenborough documentary about the midnight sun in the arctic – where vulnerable animals would be on constant high alert without a place to hide. It felt like a fitting metaphor for an untrusting relationship, where one would keep track of the other.”

‘24hrs of Sunlight’ is one of four brand new tracks to feature on Arabella Street (Part 2), out today via The Orchard/Sony Music. The new music is the companion piece to Arabella Street – released back in May and featuring breakout single ‘The Come Down Was Real’.

The sum of all these parts will form Drapht’s six full-length studio album – to be released in 2019. The majority of the material was written during an extended road trip across the West Coast of America in 2017, driving around a 30ft RV.

Tkay Maidza, Adrian Eagle, Cool Out Sun, Kaiit, and more announced as part of WOMADelaide 2019 Line-Up

More than 40 sensational new acts from over 25 countries were added to WOMADelaide’s already strong 2019 festival line-up today, and the countdown is now on with the festival to be staged from Friday 8 – Monday 11 March in Adelaide’s Botanic Park.

Leading the charge – The Original Gypsies (France), featuring key founding members of the legendary 80s group, The Gipsy Kings. Reunited after more than 20 years, their fiery rumbas and furious flamenco will ignite hearts and feet, as they perform their much-loved songs. The intense heat of their music hasn’t dropped a single notch; it’s still fuelled by glorious sandpaper vocals and furiously strummed guitars.

Joining them will be one of the biggest names in modern African music; actress and social activist Fatoumata Diawara (Mali), whose 2011 debut “Fatou” was described by The Guardian as “spellbinding”. In 2018 she has taken her artistry to thrilling heights on her album “Fenfo”, featuring on Disclosure’s new song “Ultimatum” and making the cover of Songlines magazine.

Liz Phair (USA) celebrates the 25th anniversary of her 1993 debut studio album “Exile in Guyville”, ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released during the peak of the grunge movement, Phair’s influence in alternative rock – and particularly on female voices in the genre – can still be felt today. In complete contrast, after 30 years of touring the globe, the pioneer of Balkan clubbing, the incendiary Shantel & Bucovina Club Orkestar (Romania/Germany) will perform in Australia for the first time.

WOMADelaide 2019 showcases a plethora of amazing musicians, many of who are masters of stringed instruments; from Amjad Ali Khan (India) & the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (announced last month) to violinist and loop artist Maarja Nut & Ruum (Estonia), to The Original Gypsies. The lineup also includes the internationally renowned jazz harpist, Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet (Poland/UK) and the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a West African Griot family, Sona Jobarteh (The Gambia). On the flipside, electronic rockers DuOud (Tunisia/Algeria) combine their love of the oud with the latest in technology, and one of Australia’s most lateral thinking and inventive ensembles, Adelaide’s own Zephyr Quartet, will take the stage.

“Only in Adelaide and only at WOMADelaide can audiences experience the sights, sounds and delights of cultures from over 40 countries presented by over 600 artists across 69 groups in one amazing weekend, which also demonstrates why Adelaide is Australia’s only UNESCO City of Music,” said WOMADelaide Director, Ian Scobie.

Other international artists announced today include the first ever Moroccan artist to play WOMADelaide, the Gnawa music and Guembri (lute) master, Hamid El Kasri. The DJ lineup includes stalwarts Leftfield and DJ Harvey from the UK, Danny Krivit (USA) and DJ SAMA’, a young woman known as Palestine’s first DJ and electronic music producer.

Marrugeku’s latest dance production, “Le Dernier Appel (The Last Cry)”, featuring a cast from Australia and New Caledonia, explores the challenges of colonisation; what to embrace and what to let fall, to a throbbing soundtrack by artists including Australia’s Ngaiire.

The Australian talent in the program is as rich as ever. Mojo Juju returns to WOMADelaide after three years, with her new album “Native Tongue” seeing her nominated for three ARIA Awards and three The Age Music Victoria Awards. Zimbabwean-born, Melbourne-based soul singer, Thando has also had a stunning year, kicking it off with a powerhouse collaboration with REMI. Bringing her brand of sophisticated folk music is Thelma Plum and enchanting audiences with her honeyed vocals, fierce rhymes and bold style, comes 20-year-old Kaiit.

Off stage, the site performance & installation artists will include Olivier Grossetête (France) who creates ‘collaborative monumental constructions with Ephemeral City. A colossal cardboard archway, towering at over 20 metres, will take shape across the festival weekend with the help of students from the new Adelaide Botanic High School and WOMADelaide audiences.

Compagnie BiLBoBaSSo’s “Amor” (France) combines theatre, dance and pyrotechnics, transforming one couple’s turbulent pathways in love into a stunning, fiery finale. And Le Phun (France) bring The Leafies (Les Pheuillus) – ephemeral human figures made of autumn leaves – to Botanic Park to reflect the spirit of nature as they mysteriously populate the park. Ty Mikado Teams Up With His Brother On New Single ‘Monster’

‘Monster’ is the latest offering from one of Australian Hip-Hop’s best-kept secrets ’Ty Mikado’. Released digitally on all major platforms and accompanied by a dark masterpiece of a music video, complete with some levitation because, well why not? The video visually represents the feelings of depression and anxiety expressed throughout the lyrics of the track.

The instrumental was originally crafted by Sydney beatsmith ‘Patrick James’, who also happens to be Ty’s brother, with post-production on the beat performed by Mikado. The mix and master were executed by Ty at the Indigo Embassy, and the music video was even directed and edited by the man himself. So it seems it’s true, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself…

JamarzOnMarz, an Australian Lyricist and Saxophonist, releases his first single, ‘Amnesia’, from his forthcoming debut project. After the release of the Spotify Viral Chart hit, ‘Fire Extinguisher’, JamarzOnMarz is making a return to his worldwide audience with another controversial hit, but this time produced by the renown CashMoneyAp. Lyrically, ‘Amnesia’ delves into an uncharted Hip-Hop territory, as it dabbles with themes of gay sexuality and culture, and calls for a reinvigoration of competitive rap in Australia.

“I’m in my own lane. Who else can get straight people rapping gay lyrics?” – JamarzOnMarz

Three things inspired Jamarz’ amnesia: one, Grindr ‘hook-ups’ that became possessive (Jamarz identifies as gay), two, the use of party drugs inherent in gay nightlife culture, and thirdly, the Australian music industry overlooking his talent and accomplishments. Jamarz cements his self-proclaimed rise to rap “suprem[acy]” with clever plays on his sexuality; “Our closets aren’t on par, masc[uline] can’t match marz bar for bar”, and his alto saxophone subtly sampled throughout the track.

On a recent Instagram Live, JamarzOnMarz stated that ‘Amnesia’ is “the greatest Australian rap song, ever”. Jamarz’ confidence has built up over the past year following a performance with Solange in her band; for four sold-out shows at the Sydney Opera House, a set at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on a LGBTQ line-up; with Courtney Act and Marcia Hines, and a Guinness World Record Toga Party; at the iconic Riverstage in Brisbane.
