Drapht Introduces ‘Arabella Street’ Part 2

New Single ’24hrs Of Sunlight’ Out Now

Australian hip-hop artist Drapht has a special treat for his fans today. The multi-platinum, ARIA award winning Perth artist has just dropped Part 2 of his sprawling Arabella Street album as well as a brand-new single ’24hrs of Sunlight’ produced with Six Four.

Drapht – 24hrs of Sunlight

Premiered this week on triple j Good Nights, ’24hrs of Sunlight’ is catchy as hell and summer anthem in the making. Drapht explains further…

“The concept for ’24hrs of Sunlight’ has travelled through many different production styles and life forms over the last 7 years. The idea originally came from a David Attenborough documentary about the midnight sun in the arctic – where vulnerable animals would be on constant high alert without a place to hide. It felt like a fitting metaphor for an untrusting relationship, where one would keep track of the other.”

‘24hrs of Sunlight’ is one of four brand new tracks to feature on Arabella Street (Part 2), out today via The Orchard/Sony Music. The new music is the companion piece to Arabella Street – released back in May and featuring breakout single ‘The Come Down Was Real’.

The sum of all these parts will form Drapht’s six full-length studio album – to be released in 2019. The majority of the material was written during an extended road trip across the West Coast of America in 2017, driving around a 30ft RV.

Legendary Australian record label based out of inner Brisbane, Queensland Hydrofunk Records turns 21 this year and coincides with a string of new releases from various artists on their impressive roster – including the highly anticipated upcoming album from Resin Dogs titled ‘Notorious D.O.G.’.

Before forming as a record label, the Hydrofunk name was prominent in putting on a series of Hip-Hop events around Brisbane and it is here where DJ Katch and Dave Atkins met initially in the mid-90’s. They would go on to solidify their working relationship that would eventually develop into one of Australia’s most iconic and important Hip-Hop record labels to date in Hydrofunk and hugely influential Hip-Hop funk-infused band in Resin Dogs.

Formed in 1997 as a record label, Hydrofunk first released Blunted Stylus’s self-titled LP before dropping in 1998 Resin Dogs’ From The Volkanic Lab and Grinnin’ Eps, with the latter garnering significant radio play nationally. This relatively early success helped the label lock in a major distribution deal the following year with Virgin/EMI, something incredibly significant for the time for the quietly emerging local Hip-Hop landscape in Australia.

In 2002, Hydrofunk Records licensed its first overseas label in London’s influential underground Hip-Hop label Low Life Records. Low Life Records boasted artists including Braintax (label owner) Jehst, Task Force, Skinnyman, Verb T, Harry Love, Mystro, Dubbledge, Asaviour, Micall Parknsun and Rodney P (London Posse) – with many of these artists having or subsequently developing significant musical relationships with Australia. In 2007, Hydrofunk created a new label in Hydropunk Records. The first release on this new label was from Brisbane 4-piece metalcore band Godnose. Two years later Dave Atkins would join multi-platinum selling rock band Wolfmother on drums and toured the world as both their and Azealia Banks’ drummer, highlighting his talented diversity in music. Hyrdofunk has also recently expanded into Japan, showcasing their vibrant sound to an even further audience.

At the forefront of Hydrofunk Records, the multiple award-winning group Resin Dogs since 1996 have themselves sold 10,000’s of albums, toured the world, had their music featured in a major video game and collaborated or toured nationally with the likes of Black Eyed Peas, The Pharcyde, Aceyalone and Mikah 9 from Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude, The Nextmen, Kenny Dope and the Jungle Brothers amongst many others. Having released four albums and eight EPs to date as the Resin Dogs alone, the prolific members would go on to numerous and varied other musical endeavors.

While the Hydrofunk Records name is synonymous in its association with Resin Dogs, offshoots 2 Dogs and Blunted Stylus, it has proved to be much more than a one-trick dog. It has served as a platform to release classic material from Australian Hip-Hop groups including Downsyde, Koolism, Sydney legend’s Def Wish Cast and most recently Pegz & Silent Titan.

In recent years the release output has increased, with notable impressive releases from Calski, Benjamin Walsh, Uhnellys, Tigermoth, and Indigenoise. With recent news breaking of a brand new Resin Dogs album being announced titled Notorious D.O.G dropping shortly featuring Mantra, Plutonic Lab, Essa, Hau, Dialectrix, SiFixion, Abstract Rude and more, now is as good as time as any to get familiar with Hydrofunk Records if you have not been fortunate enough to come across the sound makers from Australia. History continues to be written by them as they appear to be now embracing the next generation of talented musicians, giving hope that the tried, tested and trusted Hydrofunk name will remain for years to come as a quality stamp of approval. They may have come a long way since their graffiti and breakin’ days, buy Hydrofunk Records have retained a name synonymous with quality and anything released internationally with their stamp on it is something to check.

‘What’s The Problem, Norman?’

What’s The Problem, Norman? After finishing making the music for this one,I felt it had a real ‘Sin City’ vibe to it. So when delving into the lyrics I went searching through a bunch of Frank Miller comics and found the line “Whatever is the problem, Norman?” in his comic ‘Hard Boiled’. It was odd and had a nice ring to it, and the concept of revolting against ‘Norman/normal’ is one close to my heart. The David Bowie post-chorus line came from a homeless man on the streets of St Kilda after we had just played a show in Melbourne. And the Medicine Man lines in the second verse and bridge were inspired by my time in Ecuador….. Collage by Isabel Chiara

Ty Mikado Teams Up With His Brother On New Single ‘Monster’

‘Monster’ is the latest offering from one of Australian Hip-Hop’s best-kept secrets ’Ty Mikado’. Released digitally on all major platforms and accompanied by a dark masterpiece of a music video, complete with some levitation because, well why not? The video visually represents the feelings of depression and anxiety expressed throughout the lyrics of the track.

The instrumental was originally crafted by Sydney beatsmith ‘Patrick James’, who also happens to be Ty’s brother, with post-production on the beat performed by Mikado. The mix and master were executed by Ty at the Indigo Embassy, and the music video was even directed and edited by the man himself. So it seems it’s true, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself…

Tasman Kieth Releases Debut EP ‘Mission Famous’

Following up the fire-spitting ode to personal triumph, My Pelopolees, Tasman Keith has flipped the table with the music video for Divided; a smooth flow about the harder times, depression and the blurred lines between shared experiences.

Divided was the final taste of Tasman Keith’s debut EP ‘Mission Famous‘ ahead of its release today, Friday, October 26. To celebrate it’s release Tasman is now the cover photo for the official Australian Hip Hop Spotify playlist, ‘All Aussie Hip Hop’.

600x600bf

A loud voice in the fight for recognition, compassion and acceptance for individuals struggling through mental illness; Tasman takes the stories of those in his circle, combines them with his own personal stories and challenges his audience to find the line.

“Divided speaks from a standpoint in which I’m finding myself in the same position as many people do, dealing with depression and issues that are tough to face. Throughout the entire song, I dip in between speaking from a personal experience and taking the experience of others that I have seen be affected by these issues, people in my circle, family. The challenge for the listener is trying to find where that line is drawn, which parts are my truth and which parts are the truths of others,” said Tasman.

2017 marked a major milestone for Tasman; bursting on the independent hip-hop scene with his debut studio single ‘Might Snap’ which followed multiple underground mixtape releases since 2014. ‘Might Snap’ went into rotation across several community radio platforms including FBi Radio and received critical acclaim on triple j Unearthed. Shortly after, Tasman teamed up with ARIA nominated producer James Mangohig and Bad Apples Music’s Nooky to begin the process of compiling his debut studio EP.

Tasman has since shared the stage with renowned artists such as A. B. Original, Briggs, Birdz and Caiti Baker and performed at the Blue Mountain Music Festival and the Bad Apples Music House Party. Tasman had also collaborated with renown writer, poet, and rapper Omar Musa for the lead single ‘Assimilate’ on his album, ‘Since Ali Died’.

Tasman echoes the powerful message he presents in his music, using his platform to be a powerful voice for social justice and Indigenous issues. He was invited by lauded UK hip-hop artist, poet, writer, and activist Akala to sit on the Sydney Ideas Panel during which Tasman spoke passionately about the importance of using hip-hop as a medium to shed light on important issues facing his community and society at large.
