Lives have been lost. So many homes incinerated

Lives have been lost. So many homes incinerated. 😞

Environmental disasters are abstract until your family and friends are being evacuated and ash is falling from the sky. My heart is in the Blue Mountains as one of the biggest megafires on record bears down. But it’s also with all of NSW, from the North to the Central and South Coasts. We’ve all been burning and breathing hazardous smoke for a month now.

And SA… We’re watching those flames roar so close to your streets and homes. Terrifying.

Smoke had drifted 1000kms from NSW bushfires to hit Melbourne. What the hell. Memories of terrible Victorian fires must hang heavy and the threat is rising. The whole country is experiencing record temperatures and we’re seeing heatmaps of the whole country inked deep red.

Crazy to think about the courage and sacrifice of all the fire services standing between us and the burning chaos. It may be a job or a personal commitment but the levels of crazybrave that you’d need to stare it down and wade into the smoke is so deeply, profoundly appreciated. I read reports of RFS workers queuing up at Bunnings and paying for fire fighting gear out of their own pocket. Unfathomable that our gov’t seem so completely out of step with circumstances on the ground. Beyond appalled. And the worst seems yet to come, today is dangerous.

The environment should never have been an ideological battleground for humans to have a culture war. For too long we’ve been buried in debates about what is real rather than getting on with preparing for everyone’s future. It takes my breath away how casual govt has been these last few weeks and these things are clearly connected.

It’s a hard time for a lot of ppl on the eve of christmas.

It’s a good time to be with people you love.

Hoping you see this through 👊🏻💜

I hope Sampa the Great wins best hip hop at arias tonight

I hope Sampa the Great wins best hip hop at arias tonight. She’s done extraordinary things with this record, here and internationally. Respect to the Hoods, they’re icons and they win this every year they have music out (and will probably again). Big respect to Tkay, Baker Boy and also my fam Horrorshow, B Wise, Homeward Bound, Okenyo, Nooky and Tasman Keith.

Too many artists have sacrificed years of their lives and sanity to create their art and may never get a nomination, so take em with a big grain of salt. Awards will never sum up your value.

With the speed that hip hop is moving in this country, I feel like things will change forever from here on and I’m pumped about it.

Hi Melbourne 👋. I’m here to play with The Bamboos tonight at the Recital Centre. Come thru!

Lucky to call Jayteehazard my touring DJ, a collaborator who enhances our performances and literally holds me down. His own releases are mad, they don’t get enough attention imo. In addition he makes his own videos – have a look at this animation visualiser he created for newest song Drown. I mean, seriously?!! The guy is a genius. Show him some love and don’t be shy. Life is too short. See More

You Are What You Haven’t Done – Tim Levinson, Urthboy

If you know your local hip hop culture from the early 2000s you’ll remember Mark Pollard, a young journalist who created Stealth Magazine. Years later he moved to NYC and into advertising and communications and he’s someone I’ve admired forever. It was a pleasure to sit down and talk for an hour about art and what motivates me when I visited New York last month. I talked about untangling right and wrong and aspiring to be a yes man (for reasons that aren’t what they may seem). He put it up on his Sweathead podcast you can listen to here

Melbourne Writers Festival – Program

The lineup of artists on this Duets series for Melbourne Writers Festival is outrageous. I feel honoured to be amongst it, and talking to my friend Ecca Vandal, an artist I admire heaps. Moderated by my mate Sosefina Gwendaline, it’s going to be fun! I think? I’m excited about it. Come along.

DJ A.L.F

My ol mate Alf Nguyen died suddenly at work on Friday night. He was doing what he loved, DJing and filling the dancefloor under his artist name DJ A.L.F. I can’t say enough about the sadness I feel for him, for his lovely partner of 21 years, Rita, and their beautiful kid Chauncey. Ozi Batla introduced me to Alf and he became a really important person in my early days of making music. He joined my first band Explanetary (feat elgusto and luke dubs of hermitude) and was known for his tasteful musical cuts rather than DJ battle wizardry – exactly our vibe. We did a lot of sessions in his little granny shack setup down in the Shire, experimenting with melody, production, songwriting and collaborating. He co-produced a song that was so dear to me that I gave it to my wife on our wedding day! I reconnected with him a couple of years ago and was reminded about how cool he was. A friend you could just slot back in with. He’s one of those people you want to know for decades just to have time for when life opens up some space to hang out more. It hurts to know that won’t be the way it is. There is a gofundme page set up, which is in support of his family https://www.gofundme.com/f/alf-nguyen See More

Jetlagged, tryna cross streets in a new city

Respect to you young legends for driving home the deadly serious state of affairs with climate change. All the pushback and denial is proof that reckless idiots will always have power, and they won’t do things in the interest of your future, only their short term gain. They are utterly compromised. 100% solidarity with everyone marching and rallying around the world today 💪🏻👊🏻♥️ See More
