A stalwart of his city’s music scene, Defron has performed in Melbourne’s most esteemed venues including Workers Club, The Espy, Laundry Bar, Evelyn Hotel, Penny Black, Max Watts and more. He has shared the stage alongside Odd Future, 360, Mantra, Illy, Seth Sentry, Akil (of Jurassic 5) and Pez. With an esteemed reputation for his freestyle rapping capabilities, Defron has hosted private & public events including Australia’s National Youth Week launch day, Metro Public Transport’s Victorian Great Race and RMIT’s 2018 Welcome series.

As a writer his fiction & non-fiction has been published in Going Down Swinging, Verandah, Voiceworks, Overland, Tone Deaf, Kill Your Darlings and in 2011 he was shortlisted for the Judith Rodriguez Prize.

Rapping since adolescence, a music career was initially unlikely for Defron after he was diagnosed with hearing impairment at five years of age. Adversity reared its head once again when he was treated for testicular cancer fourteen years later. In 2018 he shared his inspiring life story in his TedX talk, ‘You are the hero and villain of your story’.

Hot on the heels of that TedX talk, Defron releases uplifting anthem Reign Cheque.

Produced by fellow Melbourne hip-hop artist Sinks (Echo Drama/2017 Hilltop Hoods Initiative Recipient) with artwork by frequent collaborator Katie Alexander, Reign Cheque is a theme-song for getting up, getting out and achieving your dreams. The promotional single is Defron’s first release in two years and comes ahead of his upcoming project Maybe You’ll Be Famous When You’re Dead, which is entirely produced by Melbourne newcomer Entelechy and engineered by star on the rise Kwasi.

The new song comes not long after Defron’s recent TedX talk,‘You are the hero and villain of your story’. The personal message of overcoming your demons and embracing your role as both protagonist and antagonist of your story permeates this boom-bap banger from the 2009 Revolver MC Battle Champion and 2017 Australian Poetry Slam state finalist.

“This is my best shot at making a song for a 2K or FIFA video game soundtrack,” says Defron. “My new project Maybe You’ll Be Famous When You’re Dead is a dark conceptual album addressing mental health, so before that drops I wanted to release an inspiring and hyped-up joint. Just to tide my fans over before MYBFWYD drops.”

The promotional single is the first of two ahead of the release of Maybe You’ll Be Famous When You’re Dead, due late 2018. The second single is expected for release in September, produced by Kwasi the song will demonstrate a new direction for underground lyricist Defron: “Reign Cheque is the rap music people expect from me: metaphor heavy, tonnes of wordplay and dense lyricism. But the next single with Kwasi, and then the separate MYBFWYD project, man, those are gonna surprise some folks.”

Zimbabwean born, Perth native Alex Parkman emerges with his debut, feature length single, Out of Touch. Parkman delivers a smooth blend of new-wave Hip Hop and R&B with deep, emotive concepts.

As a Zimbabwean born immigrant, He moved to Australia with excitement for his new life. With the challenges of adjusting to a new culture, Alex quickly found comfort in knowing that music transcended all cultural barriers.

For him, making music was a gateway to connect and formed a sense of belonging. Out of Touch is an emotional anthem that explores aspects of lust, communication, and love. It delves into the idea of a distant relationship that is constantly out of reach.

I can see I’m bad for your health
I saw it in your eyes, I could tell you needed help
I just want you all to myself
You told me you were loved, can you tell me how it felt

The single utilises a range of moody synths and leads to create an emotional canvas for Alex’s deep, distorted vocals. The minimalist percussion and heavy auto-tune create a sombre yet flowing soundtrack to emphasise the themes of love and lust presented in the lyrics.

Parkman plans to spend 2018 releasing stand-alone singles and working with a wide variety of up and coming producers to further craft his dynamic and authentic sound before the release of his debut EP due in late 2019.

Dos Boy Releases Single ‘Yoga Babe’

Byron Bay born rapper Dos Boy returns with a fresh new trap-banger ‘Yoga Babe’ out now. After moving to Melbourne to pursue a career in music, ‘Yoga Babe’ acts as an ode to his hometown, paying homage to Byron’s huge yoga culture in a playful up-tempo manner.

“I wanted to use that sort of light hearted topic from my upbringing and blend it with the heavy trap sounds I’ve been working on with producer Agnus.” – Dos Boy

‘Yoga Babe’, driven by a bouncing piano melody and roaring base line from rising producer Agnus (Peezo, DEX), showcases the wavy and slightly comedic lyricism of Dos Boy; with Dos Boy himself stating that he sees this song as “the perfect drinking game. Sip your drink every time you hear the word “Yoga”. That would mess anyone up!”

After receiving plays on triple j Unearthed, building a steady following on Soundcloud and performing a string of headline shows across Melbourne, Dos Boy has positioned himself as an artist not to be missed. Hinting that he has an array of unreleased music, unannounced shows and even a trip to America in the works, its safe to say that 2018 is far from over for Dos Boy.

A debut album is a momentous occasion, so it’s with great anticipation we reveal ‘Area Famous’ from B Wise, one of Australia’s most exciting new talents, set for release on Friday 14 September. You don’t need to understand the importance of Sydney’s South-West to appreciate the music of B Wise, but the neighbourhoods he grew up in shaped the artist you’re hearing.

The songs celebrate the suburban streets where fibro and brick are intermixed, kids in the front yard, cars on the lawn and the greatest social melting pot in Australia wakes up everyday and makes a go of it. Wise is a product of that multicultural spirit of respect and aspiration, and they’re found throughout his scintillating flows on ‘Area Famous’.

It’s been a hectic 10 months for the rapper, with the success of singles Feel Something and The Key, a 35 date national tour with Thundamentals, a show-stopping performance at Splendour in the Grass and a huge triple Like A Version appearance in June.

From the initial waves he created off the back of Prince Akeem, B Wise has continually delivered impactful songwriting and opened up a distinct lane in Australian music. It’s a lane that connects with young African youth as much as it does suburban triple j listeners. ‘Area Famous’ is the grand statement of an artist we’ve been waiting for, someone who doesn’t look or feel like anything we’ve heard before.

From the joy and energy of The Key to the collected confidence of Actin’ Different, or the rich storytelling on the Kaiit assisted Time, ‘Area Famous’ is a fierce body of work. It features production by beatsmiths on the cutting edge of their craft; from grammy nominated Uno Stereo to DOPAM!NE, Adit (Horrorshow), Willie Tafa, Juve and more.

With the announcement of his debut album dropping next month, B Wise will be celebrating with his first headline tour across Australia kicking off in October! Presented by triple j, Niche and Elefant Traks.
