Mirrah Infuses Soul With 90’s Influences For New Single, ‘Hold On’

It’s been four years since we last heard from Sydney emcee MIRRAH. From her debut mixtape REFLECT-I-ON and her debut EP, LIFE, she confirmed her status as a force not to reckoned with on the hip-hop scene, and now the Sydney legend is back with another soulful release.

HOLD ON Single Art

Fresh from joining the Elefant Traks crew on RAGE and triple j’s Like A Version, supporting Urthboy, performing with Mojo Juju, and jumping up on stage to perform with both L-FRESH the LION and OKENYO at the Elefant Traks 20th birthday celebrations, Mirrah’s new single ‘Hold On’ proves she really is not only one of the most exciting artists in the scene right now, but also one of the most innovative and versatile voices as well.

With an extensive history in hip-hop both as an artist and dancer, Mirrah has spent the last few years performing and collaborating with L-FRESH the LION, while working on her own music. Focusing on the power and importance of self-love, Mirrah channels her life experience into her storytelling and poetry, while using pop-influenced soul and hip-hop beats which she rides with ease.

‘Hold On’ is all about remembering what is really important: good friends, living in the moment, and of course, love. Inspired by the mad rush of stores during Christmas time and how easily lost people became in their hunt for meaningless gifts, Mirrah reminds us all to never lose sight of those gifts that you can’t buy.

Taken from her forthcoming EP, LOVE, Mirrah channels conscious hip-hop influences like A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Common, Rapsody and even Kendrick Lamar as she lets her message out into the world. Now, as she steps back into the well-deserved spotlight, Mirrah brings her trademark soulful, passionate rhymes coupled with 90’s influenced beats and grooves with her, and with her forthcoming EP release, she aims to provide a bit of comfort and solace in a world that makes that hard to find.

A debut album is a momentous occasion, so it’s with great anticipation we reveal ‘Area Famous’ from B Wise, one of Australia’s most exciting new talents, set for release on Friday 14 September. You don’t need to understand the importance of Sydney’s South-West to appreciate the music of B Wise, but the neighbourhoods he grew up in shaped the artist you’re hearing.

The songs celebrate the suburban streets where fibro and brick are intermixed, kids in the front yard, cars on the lawn and the greatest social melting pot in Australia wakes up everyday and makes a go of it. Wise is a product of that multicultural spirit of respect and aspiration, and they’re found throughout his scintillating flows on ‘Area Famous’.

It’s been a hectic 10 months for the rapper, with the success of singles Feel Something and The Key, a 35 date national tour with Thundamentals, a show-stopping performance at Splendour in the Grass and a huge triple Like A Version appearance in June.

From the initial waves he created off the back of Prince Akeem, B Wise has continually delivered impactful songwriting and opened up a distinct lane in Australian music. It’s a lane that connects with young African youth as much as it does suburban triple j listeners. ‘Area Famous’ is the grand statement of an artist we’ve been waiting for, someone who doesn’t look or feel like anything we’ve heard before.

From the joy and energy of The Key to the collected confidence of Actin’ Different, or the rich storytelling on the Kaiit assisted Time, ‘Area Famous’ is a fierce body of work. It features production by beatsmiths on the cutting edge of their craft; from grammy nominated Uno Stereo to DOPAM!NE, Adit (Horrorshow), Willie Tafa, Juve and more.

With the announcement of his debut album dropping next month, B Wise will be celebrating with his first headline tour across Australia kicking off in October! Presented by triple j, Niche and Elefant Traks.

Urthboy kicks off the new year with FIRE new single ‘Have and Hold feat. TIAAN’, and announces EP.

Change is inevitable, unavoidable and it shapes up all. On his forthcoming EP, Urthboy pens his thoughts on this grandiose theme. Contemplating his experiences and mapping his own trajectories: The Turning Circle EP is five songs of reflection.

One of Urthboy’s biggest songs to date, lead single ’Have and Hold feat. TIAAN’ follows the themes of love and sacrifice – the realisation that when you get what you want there is still work to be done to keep it. Premiering on Good Nights on triple j last night, the song weaves with lyrical finesse, as he finds a way to unravel themes of relationships and politics like only an Urthboy song can.

The ‘Turning Circle’ EP arrives on March 2nd and marks the bookend of his 5th studio album The Past Beats Inside Me Like A Second Heartbeat. Whether it is observing new-wave political ignorance in ‘Flat Earth’, revisiting the feeling of a first love in ‘Crushing Hard’ or recognising the fork in the road up ahead in title track, ‘Turning Circle’, there is no doubt that this EP sees Urthboy at his most musically adventurous, and predicts that his songwriting can only get stronger… whatever direction that may be.

New single ‘Have and Hold’ is out now everywhere – LISTEN

The Turning Circle EP is available on March 2nd

The album has already landed in a handful of ‘best album’s of 2016 so far’ lists, and his recent release of ‘1 in 100,000 (Redux) feat. Raxstar’ received love in the UK with an exclusive worldwide premiere on BBC Asian Network.

Joining him on this monster of a tour is fresh Big Village signee Omar Musa, announcing only last week that he will be brandishing a new EP called ‘Dead Centre’ (released August 5th), along with rousing spoken word poet Sukhjit, who recently took the country by storm with her appearance on Australia’s Got Talent.
