PREMIERE: Perth Hip Hop Duo Otiuh Release ’85’

Otiuh are a Perth hip hop duo comprised of childhood friends Cesare Papa and Jahmeil Baker. They combine golden age lyricism with eclectic production and an infusion of funk & soul. The name of the group is taken from a Latin abstract term which refers to leisure time.

It was during these moments at concerts, festivals and in each other’s’ backyards rhyming where the two found their drive to make music. Being fans first, they cite influences anywhere from A Tribe Called Quest to Run the Jewels.

The duo released their first mixtape in 2017 and began performing around Perth. They soon formed a band and released a string of self-produced singles leading into 2018, gaining national airplay along the way. The act is gearing to release their second single of this year, ’85.

’85 is a neck-snapping groove that imagines the duo in a “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” type situation. A state where freedom of expression is enjoyed on the desert road away from society.

Otiuh deliver fast paced, braggadocios verses which bounce off exotic percussion and a creamy synth bassline. The track is further fleshed out by the baritone vocals of fellow Perth rapper José Halftime during the chorus and the screaming guitar of bandmate Will Johnson toward the end of the song.

After a successful run through the Australian series of The X-Factor, Lazy J took off with multiple releases building a solid Australian fan base. His feature on European superstar Faydee’s hit record ‘Laugh Till you Cry’ saw exposure to a new market, with the video exceeding over 60 million Youtube views, being the #1 record in multiple European countries 12 weeks straight.

However, after a few successful years throughout his late teens, J was involved in an incident that would set him back from creating music for a while.

In October 2012, Lazy J was involved in a brawl after a confrontation at his gig led to him being stabbed outside of a nightclub.  Since returning back to the music game in 2017, J has released a mixtape titled ‘Gone A Minute Too Long’, with the hit single Flatline being the first to receive a visual treatment. Now in 2018, Lazy J hasn’t wasted a minute. His latest track Make Money Not Friends features NZ artist Poetik and is produced by local producer DJ Sefru. It also features backing vocals by Sydney singer/songwriter Bea Moon. Check it out below.

Rob Shaker

Our thoughts are with Kev and his family. This type of coward, unprovoked attack has no place in our society or in Hip Hop, especially at the Rosemount, which is one of the few places that allows Hip Hop these days, due to idiots like this. Please donate if you can!
Please donate to support Kev’s coward punch go fund me campaign. For those who don’t know Kev was attacked after the Kogz show I promoted on Friday night. He is one of the biggest oz hip hop supporters I know and even came down early to grab some Shake Down Merch and have a good chat. It’s unbelievable to me that such a kind, warm hearted dude could be assaulted unprovoked especially at one of our shows. There’s no future for WA hip hop if this keeps happening. No matter how many times we’ve pushed this message bullshit like this continues to occur. I’ve seen dozens of these nights end with antisocial behavior and have tried everything I can think of to help prevent it, but there is always a small percentage of people not just within our hip hop community, but walking around amongst us who shouldn’t be. Let’s hope firstly, we can all be more responsible for our mates. This means not just making sure the friendly ones aren’t in any danger, but the ones who are sometimes aggro drunks get put in a taxi or left at home. Secondly, let’s hope his attacker is caught soon. And most importantly, let’s hope Kev makes a full and speedy recovery.
