Red Bull Music Continues ’64 Bars’ Rap Series, Shares Second Episode With B Wise

Red Bull Music continues its studio rap series ‘64 Bars’, sharing a second Australian episode with South West Sydney rapper, B Wise. The series showcases 64 bars of razor-sharp raps – no bells, no whistles, no hooks from trailblazing artists.

First created at Red Bull Studios, Auckland, ‘64 Bars’ recently launched in Australia with an episode from Brisbane independent artist, Jesswar. Grounded and deep-thinking, B Wise jumps into the ‘64 Bars’ booth to deliver sharp-witted verses with a meaningful message. Following last year’s acclaimed debut album Area Famous, that was recently named FBi SMAC Record of the Year – B Wise has leapt from strength to strength, sitting at the forefront of the local hip-hop landscape with hard-earned perspective and experience.

The 64 Bars project was first founded at Red Bull Studios Auckland with David Dallas, as a simple method of having handpicked MCs hit the booth and lay down 64 bars. The series launched to critical acclaim with Brooklyn-based world-renowned rapper Talib Kweli and has since travelled the globe with regular episodes from Japan and now Australia. Taking rap back to basics, 64 Bars gives audiences the chance to hear their favourite artists flex the skills that launched their careers, and places a firm eye on rap’s upcoming best voices.

Tune in to Red Bull Music & Culture for the latest episodes of 64 Bars.

Interview: Mitchos Da Menace Breaks His ‘SILENCE’

aahh: Compared to your previous two releases, how do you see ‘silence’ the album representing your evolution as an artist?
Menace: Brother, I was hoping that the fans could answer that question for me. Since you’re asking me though, you listen to the first album, the second album and then the third one. From that, you can see the evolution. It’s maturity bro. I had to mature with my life experiences and what’s going on at the moment and that is portrayed in my music. I’m the MENACE and you all know it now! MGR.

aahh: On the title track SILENCE you state that “you like silence but can’t stand it” can you elaborate further on the ideas behind this track and the title of the album?
Menace: It’s me saying I like to be alone but it’s going be the death of me… I self destruct in different terms, it means a lot on a personal level. I actually got a beat from Oagz called “Serenade Of Silence”. I made the album from that beat and that idea.

48954505_2107667019289797_312038737083105280_o.jpg

aahh: How do you see independent artists such as yourself shaping the future of hip hop in this country?
Menace: We are the future of Aus Hip-Hop. We have so many talented artists making moves. From Manu Crooks heading to the USA and us collaborating with UK artists. We have helped shape it whether people accept/or like it or not! We carve lanes and inspire people in the local scene!

aahh: There have been numerous positive comments we’ve read about the beat selection on the new LP. What was your process for choosing the beats on the album?
Menace: I’ve been in a dark place over the last year Jim. This includes stuff with my family and myself. I needed to get a lot off my chest. The beats I picked touched me, to be honest. Deep dark and melodic.

aahh: You’ve opened silence with a small intro, can you tell us more about this and how it relates to the wider concepts on the album?
Menace: In simpler terms, it means “We stay silent, if a problem arises, me and my family take care of it, we don’t speak out to others, stay silent” – Mitchos The Menace!

aahh: What’s next for Menace?
Menace: I have a really big year ahead. 2019 will change a lot of lives, I’ll be giving 100% in everything I do! Keep your eyes peeled, you might even catch us overseas! MG201L7 .

Perth duo Otiuh are back with old-school vibes on smooth new single, ‘Move’

Perth duo Otiuh are back with their trademark funk and soul-infused hip hop and a single that is guaranteed to keep you moving all summer long. On ‘Move’, Cesare Papa and Jahmeil Baker trade spitfire verses over tripped out and eclectic production, creating a toe-tapping, head bopping, infectious jam about never taking things too seriously and never caring about what others might think. Just let go and ‘Move’.

50502925_1103216493173085_7889253434057031680_o

Fresh from having its first spin on FBi Radio’s Sunsets with Dobby & Diola as well as premiering on Purple Sneakers, Otiuh offer up a slice of something different in the Australian hip hop landscape with ‘Move’. Combining their golden age lyricism with futuristic production, marrying the influences of A Tribe Called Quest with Outkast as their poetic roots add the final flourish.

After nabbing some national radio play on triple j for their first two singles, Otiuh continues to carve out their own space on the national radar. Laidback and never taking things too seriously, Otiuh’s music is for those who want to be taken somewhere else far away, if only for a few moments. Of their new bop, the duo said, “When you’re on the dance floor, put your phone down. Dance for yourself. You don’t have anything to prove to others.”

Thanks to its driving bass line, synth flutes and exotic percussion laying down a smooth foundation for the pair to go back and forth with their rapid rhymes, ‘Move’ is one track that gets into your bones and makes you feel good from the inside out.

Otiuh enter a new chapter with ‘Move’ – one that will see them bring their alternative hip hop sounds to the fore, and have a great time while doing it.

Manaz Ill elevates with the release of new single “Level Up”

The Adelaide Hip-Hop mainstay sets the stage for the release of his long-awaited album ‘Braille’ with the Hamley produced lead single “Level Up”.

Featuring an infectious hook over ominous production, the energetic lead single sees Manaz flexing his signature brand of lyricism, openly challenging his contemporaries to step their game up.

“The song is meant to serve as motivation, both to my listeners and myself. It’s the soundtrack for anyone striving to better themselves” says Manaz, real name Rian Kavanagh.

Due To Overwhelming Demand J.I.D Announces Second Melbourne Show

Having sold out his debut Australian headline show in just a matter of hours the East Atlanta rapper J.I.D has confirmed a second and final show at Melbourne’s Max Watts on Friday, March 1 due to overwhelming demand!

Final tickets go on sale at 12pm Friday, January 18. For complete tour and ticket information, visit: livenation.com.au.

Growing up on a mix of his parents’ collection of classic funk and soul LPs, J.I.D first appeared on the Atlanta hip-hop scene with his debut EP “Dicaprio” in 2015. After a stint at Hampton University playing football, J.I.D hooked up with fellow MCs as part of the Spillage Village collective – eventually making the move to drop out of college and focus solely on music. In 2014 he set off on tour with EarthGang, Bas, and Ab-Soul – this allowed J.I.D to craft his skills, and a year later he recorded and dropped the “DiCaprio” EP, which saw him team up with a host of producers, as well as EarthGang.

Following up as a sequel to his 2015 SoundCloud EP, J.I.D’s sophomore album “Dicaprio 2” features a star-studded list of collaborators and producers, including 6LACK, A$AP Ferg, Joey Bada$$, Ella Mai, J.Cole and even features one of the last tracks ever produced by Mac Miller – out now on J. Cole’s label, Dreamville. Bringing back the three-verse structure, the mixtape structured album is a sheer skill-display – showing off how far his songwriting skill has grown since his debut album, “The Never Story” in 2017.

Last seen touring Australia in 2017 on J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only tour, this will be your only chance to catch a glimpse of J.I.D’s dexterous, fired-up flow while on tour for Perth’s recently expanded rap and bass-heavy Hidden festival.
