Mr. Germain (new music in bio) I went to New Orleans for Jazz Fest 2017, purely to see Stevie Wonder play (seeing him live was always a massive bucket list tick of mine) I spent three weeks there riding a rusty old bike around I found on Craigslist, eating all of the southern soul food and writing music. The idea came while walking down a suburban NOLA street one day, and a homeless man walking in the other direction said, “Hey, stand tall! Hold your head high…”……. This completely stopped me in my tracks.. One – because of the beautiful irony of being reminded to be grateful by one who doesn’t even have enough money for his next meal, let alone a roof over his head, was quite sobering to say the least. And two – it felt like he new exactly what I was thinking within that moment. The seed for the song then grew as I rode through Holygrove recieving looks like – boy you either not from around here (clearly) or very dumb (maybe a bit of both); to being called ‘Baby’ with every supermarket visit; and to the old mythical vampire tale of Jacques St. Germain – who they say lived in the Frenchmen Quarter in the early 1900’s. The name ‘St. Germain’ actually popped up a few times on my US trip, as he was also known as the alchemist of Mount Shasta, where I spent the most part of my time writing the album. Listen to the acoustic version here.

Thundamentals also kicked off their epic national tour recently at a packed Forum Theatre in Melbourne, and now take in all capital cities across the next month before wrapping up in Fremantle on Saturday 8th December. In an exciting first after ten years of touring, Tuka, Jeswon and Morgs are joined on stage by a full six-piece band, headed by album co-producer Carl Dimataga, giving fans across the country the opportunity to immerse themselves in the live energy of the I Love Songs tracks and revel in Thundas classics in an entirely new light. Limited tickets are still available for the remaining dates.

In addition, after partnering with The Asylum Seeker Center in 2016 and the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in 2017, Thundamentals have announced the next chapter of their Got Love Initiative, donating all profits from the 2018 edition of the Got Love t-shirt to the Gadigal Information Service, home of Koori Radio 93.7 FM. Since it’s establishment in 1993, Gadigal has been the leading Indigenous cultural, arts and media organisation in NSW. Mirrah Infuses Soul With 90’s Influences For New Single, ‘Hold On’

It’s been four years since we last heard from Sydney emcee MIRRAH. From her debut mixtape REFLECT-I-ON and her debut EP, LIFE, she confirmed her status as a force not to reckoned with on the hip-hop scene, and now the Sydney legend is back with another soulful release.

HOLD ON Single Art

Fresh from joining the Elefant Traks crew on RAGE and triple j’s Like A Version, supporting Urthboy, performing with Mojo Juju, and jumping up on stage to perform with both L-FRESH the LION and OKENYO at the Elefant Traks 20th birthday celebrations, Mirrah’s new single ‘Hold On’ proves she really is not only one of the most exciting artists in the scene right now, but also one of the most innovative and versatile voices as well.

With an extensive history in hip-hop both as an artist and dancer, Mirrah has spent the last few years performing and collaborating with L-FRESH the LION, while working on her own music. Focusing on the power and importance of self-love, Mirrah channels her life experience into her storytelling and poetry, while using pop-influenced soul and hip-hop beats which she rides with ease.

‘Hold On’ is all about remembering what is really important: good friends, living in the moment, and of course, love. Inspired by the mad rush of stores during Christmas time and how easily lost people became in their hunt for meaningless gifts, Mirrah reminds us all to never lose sight of those gifts that you can’t buy.

Taken from her forthcoming EP, LOVE, Mirrah channels conscious hip-hop influences like A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Common, Rapsody and even Kendrick Lamar as she lets her message out into the world. Now, as she steps back into the well-deserved spotlight, Mirrah brings her trademark soulful, passionate rhymes coupled with 90’s influenced beats and grooves with her, and with her forthcoming EP release, she aims to provide a bit of comfort and solace in a world that makes that hard to find.

Birdz Releases New Single Ahead Of Forthcoming EP “Place Of Dreams” Feat. Ecca Vandal

Bad Apples Music signee Birdz is proud to share his new single “Place of Dreams” feat. Ecca Vandal, taken from his forthcoming EP of the same name. The release arrives ahead of a huge year for Bad Apples Music, announcing their partnership with Universal Music Australia to offer a platform for excellence for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices.
BIRDZ - PLACE OF DREAMS.jpg
Balancing moments of delicate keys between formidable beats, the track tells a tale of limitations laid down by others and ultimately having the strength to believe in oneself. Leading with the explosive vocal prowess of Ecca Vandal, the single flows with production by Trials, and the raw rap that has cemented Birdz’ status as one of the country’s most exciting hip-hop acts today. Always formed by his heritage, the track evokes a compelling story told through both lyrics and organic composition.

Birdz says of “Place of Dreams”: The song really touches on the concept of a glass ceiling and the limitations people try put on you, especially where I come from and if you’re Indigenous… Ultimately, Place Of Dreams is about believing in yourself, having the strength to break through the bullshit and continue paving your own path.

Born & raised in the Northern Territory and now based in Melbourne, Birdz has seen accolades galore following the release of his debut record in 2017, Train of Thought. Combined with a compelling Like a Version performance, the young emcee was launched into the national spotlight through support from community radio, triple j and triple j unearthed for his honest words and raw perspective on prolific social issues. The debut record awarded Best Independent Hip Hop Album at the 2018 AIR Awards, included singles “This Side” feat. Serina Pech, “Rise” feat. Jimblah, and the politically charged “Black Lives Matter”, which collectively hold over 600k streams on Spotify.

The groundbreaking artist’s burgeoning popularity has also seen him take the stage with the likes of Briggs, Sampa The Great, Loyle Carner, The Funkoars, and Thundamentals, while also igniting crowds across Woodford, Sprung Festival, The Hills Are Alive, St Kilda Festival, Groovin the Moo and this year’s Bad Apples showcase at Melbourne’s CHANGES Music Industry Summit.

This first taste of Birdz’s forthcoming EP is set to lead the way for many new releases on the horizon from Bad Apples. A commanding message delivered with fervent passion, the first bite with “Place of Dreams” will leave you craving more.

Drapht Introduces ‘Arabella Street’ Part 2

New Single ’24hrs Of Sunlight’ Out Now

Australian hip-hop artist Drapht has a special treat for his fans today. The multi-platinum, ARIA award winning Perth artist has just dropped Part 2 of his sprawling Arabella Street album as well as a brand-new single ’24hrs of Sunlight’ produced with Six Four.

Drapht – 24hrs of Sunlight

Premiered this week on triple j Good Nights, ’24hrs of Sunlight’ is catchy as hell and summer anthem in the making. Drapht explains further…

“The concept for ’24hrs of Sunlight’ has travelled through many different production styles and life forms over the last 7 years. The idea originally came from a David Attenborough documentary about the midnight sun in the arctic – where vulnerable animals would be on constant high alert without a place to hide. It felt like a fitting metaphor for an untrusting relationship, where one would keep track of the other.”

‘24hrs of Sunlight’ is one of four brand new tracks to feature on Arabella Street (Part 2), out today via The Orchard/Sony Music. The new music is the companion piece to Arabella Street – released back in May and featuring breakout single ‘The Come Down Was Real’.

The sum of all these parts will form Drapht’s six full-length studio album – to be released in 2019. The majority of the material was written during an extended road trip across the West Coast of America in 2017, driving around a 30ft RV.
